Help! E-commerce site template... (Discussion)

RLLillis saidSat, 22 Mar 2008 03:02:35 -0000 ( Link )

I working on a business plan for an e-commerce site similar to etsy.com on a local level. I know html and a little actionscript, but I have no idea where to start. I’ve worked in Joomla before…

I’ve been looking for an off-the-shelf site, but none of them look like they have a back end where people can join and upload images of their artwork.

PLEASE!!! Anyone with suggestions, advice, anything, please let me know. I thought it would be easy to find a template to buy, but that is not true.

HELP!!

Are you asking for assistence on how to deploy a shopping cart application (the logic) or just an html template (the graphics)?

The truth is, I guess I don’t know exactly what I need. It’s old adage “you don’t know what you don’t know.”

I can tell you what I want the site to do and I can tell you that I may know enough to install and manipulate a template, but I know no expert programming knowledge to build a template the will do all of the things I would like this site to do.

As for the money… I’m just going to handle that through google checkout.

    Desired Site Characteristics
    – Allow artists to register and upload images of the art they are trying to sell
    – Allow artists to assign many different parameters to the work they upload, which will make it easier to find (main color of art, medium, size, etc)
    – Also artist / artwork searches by town/county
    – Have a front page where artists can be featured and a listing of what local restaurants/galleries

Any suggestions on places to find info on my next steps? Off-the-shelf solutions? Anything?

Maybe I should start by telling you what I want to do this…

The reason I want to do this is because I’m on the local arts commission and know many local artists. The ones I’m most interested in trying to help are those doing art in retirement who are on a fixed income. They create some great art, but need a place to sell it. They generally don’t have many venues for selling their art and any additional income is vary valuable not to mention offsets arts supplies allowing them to continue creating art.

It’ll be easier to discuss a solution for you in real time. I’ve created a tutoring session but I’m thinking you aren’t around right now.

When you are message me a time you will be round so I can confirm.

I quick way to test your idea out may be to use a hosted service… once you see if the idea has traction, you could then consider putting custom development resources behind it.

There’s a fantastic Canadian company called Shopify which is the best for setting up ecommerce sites. Check it out.

I enjoy Shopify, but good luck getting assistance with liquid templates. If you do use Shopify you can ask me about getting things to work with liquid templates.

Depending on how many pieces of artwork you have you could do the web-site manually with just HTML and CSS. Under-do your competition! Grow Small
